Product Details

A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. The base of the fob would often have been used to seal the wax of a letter or note. The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface to produce and image in relief with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax, often used in signet rings.

A very unusual fob from the Edwardian (ca1910) era! This lovely English-made is piece is crafted in 9kt gold.?The design features a decorative?repousse handle, which is attached to an etched platform base. Disguised within the base is a hidden locket feature, which opens to reveal two portraits inside, framed behind glass. A set of monogrammed initials are engraved into the lid of the locket, forming a seal at the bottom of the fob. A large gold ring at the top completes the design, perfect for hanging the fob from a favorite chain. Stamped on the exterior of the fob are several English hallmarks, including a Birmingham mark that dates the piece to 1910, and the gold marks "9" and "375." A very special keepsake piece, it would make a unique addition to any antique collection!

Measurements: The fob hangs 1 1/8" long, including the ring bail at the top. The base measures 7/8" long and 3/4" wide.

Condition: The overall condition of the fob is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. The hinged locket feature remains in good condition, opening easily and snapping securely shut. The gold bail is securely attached.
